We’ve officially entered the era of Artificial Intelligence.
The development and adoption of AI tools — for content creation and many other uses — will be one of the biggest stories in 2023.
ChatGPT, a chatbot technology by OpenAI, is taking over the internet.
OpenAI is reportedly being valued at $29 billion, making it one of the U.S.’s most valuable private startups.
Other tools like Jasper AI, Writesonic, Otter AI and many others are helping democratize content creation in ways we’ve never seen.
We truly are in a groundbreaking era of technology.
So, what does this all mean if you’re a content creator?
I believe two things:
These tools are amazing
They will also ruin many creators
Many creators will get sucked into the convenience of tools like ChatGPT.
Instead of pushing their own curiosity and creativity, they’ll outsource their content to ChatGPT.
That will result in generic, vanilla fluff.
Stuff like this:

This will ruin many content creators.
What once made them unique will be lost.
There’ll be no way to distinguish their content from AI content.
Once that happens, there will be no reason to follow their work.
But this doesn’t have to be the case.
There are smart ways content creators can use AI tools to enhance their work and process.
Here are the 7 best ways to use AI for writing:
(Note: I’m using ChatGPT as the example in this post, but this applies to all AI tools).
Brainstorming
ChatGPT is a wonderful tool for ideation.
Use it to generate ideas that spark your curiosity and creativity.
Then make those ideas your own.

Research
ChatGPT is a free research assistant.
Use it to give you background information on any topic you want, then develop your unique take.

Editing + Proofreading
ChatGPT is a built-in editor for your work.
Use it for proofreading, identifying grammatical errors and suggesting ways to enhance your writing.
(Note: This kind of editing is called “line editing.” I don’t think ChatGPT can replace all forms of editing).

Collaboration
ChatGPT makes collaboration easy.
Use it for exchanging ideas and flushing out concepts in real-time with other writers and creators.

Outlining
ChatGPT makes outlining content easier than ever.
Use it to create quick structures that you can then build out, never having to start from a blank page again.

Simplifying
ChatGPT is a great tool to simplify your writing.
Use it take your original writing and make it more concise (you can then edit the new version to fit your voice, if needed).

Summarizing
ChatGPT is great for summarizing complex topics.
Use it to create an initial summary that you use as a starting point for your own piece of content.

To recap, the 7 best ways to use AI for writing:
Outlining
Simplifying
Summarizing
Collaboration
Research
Brainstorming
Editing + Proofreading
Do NOT use it to copy/paste generic AI content as your own.
At best, your content won’t differentiate you.
At worst, it’s plagiarism and you could lose all credibility.
Use these tools to enhance your process, but keep sharing your original insights and perspectives.
Action Item
Spend 10-15 minutes playing with ChatGPT this week.
It takes only a minute to open an account and get started (go here).
Have fun trying out different prompts (go here if you need inspiration).
We all need to start familiarizing ourselves with these tools, their potential and their limitations.
The best writers and content creators won’t resist the AI Era. They’ll learn how to adapt.
