Who are you writing for?
Why every content creator needs to answer this

In yesterday’s issue, we discussed the most important question for writing:
WHY are you writing and/or building an audience?
This is your foundation for everything you want to build.
Today, let’s discuss the second-most important question:
WHO are you writing for?
So many people get wrapped up in their “niche.”
They stress over WHAT they should be writing about and struggle to gain clarity.
Meanwhile, we forget that we’re writing for people.
So, I’ve found it more useful to focus on WHO.
Visualize the avatar of the person you’re writing for.
Some examples of WHO:
Salespeople
C-suite executives
Community leaders
Writers and creators
Youth sports coaches
Stay-at-home parents
People who love to read
Wine and food connoisseurs
People passionate about personal growth
You get the idea.
We’re not defining WHAT to write about.
We’re defining WHO we write for.
In each case, it’s a specific individual.
I was talking with my friends Brian and Jasper — both great writers and business operators — about this recently, and Jasper had a twist on this that I liked.
He frames it as the transformation you take your reader on, not just who you write for.
Example: “I write for salespeople” —> “I help you become a 7-figure seller”
For me, I like pairing them together.
First, clearly visualizing WHO I write for.
Second, clarifying how I help them transform.
Action Item
Spend 5-10 minutes writing down WHO you write for, not what you write about (we’ll get to the “what”).
Visualize the person as clearly as possible.
Then, write some ideas down about how you can help them transform.
How do you help them improve in some way?
Don’t worry about making this perfect — you can refine it later.
Tomorrow, we’ll start to unpack how you help the people you write for.
See you then.
