In Tuesday’s issue, we talked about the second-most important question when writing (here’s the first):

WHO are you writing for?

That’s more important than what you write about, which is where many writers and creators get hung up.

Now, let’s talk about the WHAT.

Once you’ve clarified who you’re writing for, you can start to ask questions about that person, such as:

  • What are their challenges?

  • What problems do they have?

  • What outcomes do they want?

  • What desires do they aim to achieve?

  • What do they need but don’t realize it?

  • What untapped opportunities exist for them?

By asking questions like these, you uncover how you can bring your audience value.

Here’s an example:

WHO: Let’s I’m writing for busy professionals who want to be healthier.

Now let’s work through a few of these questions.

What are their challenges?

  • Lack of time

  • Lack of knowledge

  • Lack of equipment

  • Fluctuating schedule

  • They travel a lot

What outcomes do they want?

  • Lose weight

  • Build muscle

  • Eliminate pain

  • Sleep better

  • Be more mobile

What do they need but don’t realize it?

  • A simple meal plan

  • A process for prepping food

  • A checklist of daily stretches

  • Workouts they can do anywhere

  • To upgrade their pillow and bed

These are just a few examples, but you get the idea.

You can take this as far as you’d like with the target audience you’re writing for. The deeper you understand them, the better.

No more wondering what to write about.

No more guessing what your audience wants.

No more staring at a blank page, stuck and frustrated.

Action Item

Spend some time doing the above exercise after you’ve identified WHO you write for.

You can use the questions I’ve provided or your own prompts.

The objective is to deeply understand the challenges, goals, desires, etc of your audience.

The content you create will be their solution.

So, that’s what your audience wants and needs.

Tomorrow, we’re going to cover what YOU want and need (equally as important).

See you then.
